Most shops are situated within walking distance, making Amsterdam an ideal city for shopping. Amsterdam offers visitors small exclusive shops as well as international designer brands.
General opening times are 10:00 to 18:00 hrs. On Sunday most shops and markets are closed. About half of the shops on the main shopping streets are open on Sundays. There is also a late-night shopping occasion on Thursdays until 21:00.
The main shopping areas are the Leidsestraat between the Leidseplein and Spui, and the Kalverstraat. There are large department stores near the Kalvertoren (V&D and Hema), and at the Dam (the Bijenkorf and shopping centre Magna Plaza).
The Jordaan and the streets around it contain many small interesting individual shops. You should try the 9 Straatjes area in the Jordaan. The area is beautiful and browsing through the more characteristic shops will bring you in contact with friendly locals. The P.C. Hooftstraat and district, near the museums, contains many of the more chic shops with designer labels.
If you like markets, there are three interesting markets in Amsterdam. The Flower market is located between the shopping streets Leidsestraat en Kalverstraat at the Singel. For Second-hand curiosa you should visit the flea market around the City Hall (Waterlooplein). Cosmopolitan food and cheap clothes are offered at the Albert Cuyp markt (trams 4, 6, 10 and 16).
In the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and Kerkstraat there are many cute art and antique shops. These streets are near the museums and the Leidseplein.
